WW2 Submarine USS Grunion Found by the Captain’s Sons

Sunday Aug 17, 2008

A team lead by Brad and John Abele, sons of Lieutenant Commander Mannert L. Abele, found the wreckage of the US Grunion (SS-216) on August 6, 2007. Following the last know course of the Grunion, and recently discovered notes from a Japanese sailor, the search team found her pretty much where they expected, a spot just north of Kiska Island at the tip of the Aleutians.

It seems that she attacked a convoy headed into Kiska and may have been surprised by one of the freighter’s 5 inch deck gun. Based on the damage seen in the wreckage, the two theories are that she took a single hit from the deck gun in the conning tower and that was possibly followed by a hit from a circular torpedo run.

The search team used sophisticated sonar technology to find the sub, then confirmed the find with photos and video from a remotely piloted vehicle.

An award-winning documentary film was made about the successful search and is available at ” title=”WW2 Submarine”>Amazon.com
